Pick the variety that is being spoken
Mandarin and Cantonese are separate entries in the Speech Recognition Language list. Choose the one the meeting is actually held in: a session set to Mandarin listens for Mandarin, and Cantonese speech in it will need checking against the audio.
For a meeting that mixes Mandarin with English terms, choose Mandarin and read the English terms, names and numbers against the recording before quoting them.
Where Traditional Chinese fits
The Chinese recognition option is labelled Simplified Chinese. Traditional Chinese (繁體中文) appears in MemoFlow in two other places: as a Live Interpretation target and as an app interface language. If you need the meeting record itself in Traditional Chinese, this is the limitation to know before relying on MemoFlow for it.
Cantonese in Live Interpretation
Cantonese can be the source of an interpretation session, so you can follow a Cantonese speaker in English, Mandarin or any other target. It is not one of the 33 languages the translator writes, so nothing can be translated into Cantonese.
Mandarin works in both directions: as a source, and as a target for any of the other 29 transcription languages.
How Chinese results are scored
Chinese text has no spaces between words, so MemoFlow's ASR benchmark method scores both Mandarin and Cantonese by character error rate. No Chinese result has been published yet, and this page makes no accuracy claim.
Limits to know
- The language is chosen before recording; there is no automatic language detection.
- Live captions need a connection. Offline recording continues without them.
- No accuracy figure is published for any language.
- Machine translation, not a human interpreter.
- Traditional Chinese is not a recognition option.
- Nothing can be translated into Cantonese.
- Regional accents and dialects other than Cantonese have not been evaluated separately.
